Thank You Summer Interns!

As our summer 2021 internships come to a close, we want to highlight each of our talented interns that made an impact this summer.

Emily

Hello! My name is Emmy Sinconegui and I’m from New York. I am a rising junior at Emory University studying marketing at the Goizueta Business School. A fun fact about me is that I got to see One Direction perform live before they broke up and it is still the highlight of my tween years. 

I am a digital marketing intern at Art in Action and I help with development for their website. The importance of arts education is something that is very dear to me as I have seen firsthand how much of an impact arts education can have on children and their communities. Having a father who is an artist born in Cuba, I understand the importance of encouraging creative expression and how lucky we are to be able to do so! My favorite type of art to do myself are oil paintings! And yes, I have a lot of stained clothes to prove it. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with such a supportive and kind community here at Art in Action. I have already learned so much!

Ethan

Hello! My name is Ethan. I am currently a rising sophomore at Foothill College where I major in business administration. Fun Fact: as a kid in elementary school and middle school I always loved when our class got to do the Art in Action lessons, and now as a college student I am working for AIA! Clearly things have really come full circle for me.

My focus at Art in Action has been our databases. We use platforms such as Salesforce and Greater Giving to manage and keep track of our relationships with donors and contributors of AIA. I work to update this data, clean it up, and use it to pull reports for the Art in Action team so we can make more informed management and marketing decisions. Art has always been a way for me to express myself in a creative and exciting way and I love that I get to contribute to an organization that works to encourage kids in the same way!

Kathryn

Hi I’m Kathryn! I’m from Redwood City, CA and I’m a rising sophomore at Loyola Marymount University in LA. At LMU, I’m studying Marketing and I’m involved in the Marketing Society, an online college women’s magazine called Her Campus LMU, Student Ambassadors, and Alpha Chi Omega. A fun fact about me is that I played competitive softball for 9 years.

My internship this summer focuses on social media marketing. As a social media marketing intern for Art in Action, I create, schedule, and post content on all of their social media platforms, specifically Facebook and Instagram. I think arts education is important because it allows kids to express themselves and their creativity. My favorite types of art are photography, graphic design, and typography. As a former Art in Action student, I’m so excited to be working with the organization!

Jeanette

My name is Jeanette Leech, and I graduated from UC Davis in 2020 with a double major in Art Studio and Cinema & Digital Media. I am currently residing in my hometown, Berkeley, CA, and plan to go to graduate school in the near future (either for art or film, I still haven’t figured that out)! A fun fact about me is that I love horror movies and made my first movie in middle school which was a horror spoof about Santa Claus killing people (it was called “Santa’s Hit List”).

I have thought education in art is important since I was in elementary school since my school was focused on art (Berkeley Arts Magnet) and I participated in many after-school programs and camps focused on art. These experiences helped me find my passion for art while it gave my peers a new perspective and an outlet to express themselves and explore their imagination.

The focus of my internship with Art in Action is to craft social media posts for the Development team and make social media toolkits for board members to promote the Redwood City community mural and the Spring campaign. I am also interviewing and recording artists and donors for Object Art 2021 so their work can be described by them during the auction. My favorite type of art is installation and video art which can be seen in the work of famous artists like Isaac Julien and Nam June Paik.

Nicole

My focus this summer with Art in Action is program development. I am helping create discussion questions for students and putting together a new artist series. I believe arts education is extremely valuable, as it allows students to be creative and not worry about perfection in the classroom. Not all students are confident in their abilities to read, write, or do math, but art allows us to let go of expectations and communicate our feelings beyond language. I have been fortunate to be surrounded by art my whole life, and it is my dream to pay that forward so young students can grow up imaginative, empathetic, and confident. My favorite type of art is hand drawn animation. I think the style is so beautiful, because lines and shapes are created by someone instead of a computer, and have an imperfect, stylized quality.

Avalon

My name is Avalon Allen, and I’m a marketing intern at Art in Action who deals primarily with writing and posting educational blogs. A fun fact about me is that I have traveled extensively all over the world and seen many foreign countries, but I’ve barely seen any of the US except for California (where I was born and raised).

I personally like a lot of contemporary art that’s more experimental. The weirder the better! My favorite artists include Charlie White, Al Columbia, Patricia Piccinini, and so many more.

I think arts education is crucial to the development and maturing of children. While it might sound cliche, I truly believe art and the history behind it can play a pivotal role in gaining perspective about both yourself and the world around you. Researching and posting about art has been a dream come true, being a definitively educational process that has showed me more than I ever expected.

Jackson

Hi my name is Jackson Elder and I’m a film student from Austin, Texas currently attending California College of the Arts. At a young age I showed an interest in film. In the future I want to write and direct independently produced movies. I work in the media department at Art in Action where I edit videos. A few months ago I moved from Austin to San Francisco to take a couple of classes and be an intern at Art in Action.

These amazing students helped further our mission, support major initiatives, and help set Art in Action up for a successful new school year.

We will miss them dearly!
