Art In Action Community Mural

On June 10-13th, Art in Action and Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School’s fourth grade students vibrantly painted an uplifting community mural in Downtown Redwood City titled Connections, Community, and Hope. This mural alludes to youthful dreams and aspirations of a more peaceful and just future through the diverse silhouette children playing in harmony. Beyond the colorful surface, this art project embodies the bright futures that are possible when students have access to a comprehensive art curriculum.

Throughout the installation, students eagerly participated, always asking if they could paint more flowers, insects, or silhouettes. Even with masks on, cheerful smiles were felt in abundance as the children were finally able to see their friends—after a year of distance-learning because of COVID-19—and paint the mural they designed for months. Meanwhile the siblings of these fourth graders adorned the floors in chalk art, adding a lively flurry of designs from animals to landscapes.

Art in Action is profoundly grateful for all the support we received from our generous community of sponsors, donors, volunteers, teachers, and students. Creation of this community mural was a beautiful experience we can’t wait to replicate!
