Art in Action Remembers Faith Ringgold

We are deeply saddened to share about the passing of an iconic artist and storyteller, Faith Ringgold, who left us on April 13, 2024, at the age of 93. Known for her vivid story quilts that weave rich narratives about African American life and history, Faith's art transcended the confines of traditional media, leaving a legacy that will inspire generations.

Faith Ringgold's journey in the arts began in the vibrant neighborhoods of Harlem, where she was born and raised. Despite facing numerous challenges, her relentless spirit saw her making monumental strides in a medium deeply rooted in African American heritage. Her quilts, such as "Who’s Afraid of Aunt Jemima," are more than just art; they are powerful commentaries on society and the enduring strength of Black women. Faith’s “Dancing At the Louvre” inspired Art in Action’s Program 5 lesson.

Faith's remarkable career spanned across multiple disciplines, including painting, sculpture, and children’s books, each marked by her distinct, bold style and profound storytelling. Her work not only challenged but reshaped the narratives around African American identity and female empowerment.

One of her most beloved works, "Tar Beach," based on her own story quilt, turned into a cherished children’s book that continues to ignite the imaginations of young readers, teaching them that they can soar beyond their circumstances.

Her voice and vision reached many, including Art in Action’s guests at our annual fundraiser, “Soiree 2014.”, where Faith was a beacon of inspiration as our keynote speaker. Her words, filled with wisdom and passion, resonated deeply, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to listen.

Today, as we reflect on her extraordinary life and contributions, let's hold on to her message: “the power of art to transform, to challenge, and to boldly envision new possibilities.” Faith Ringgold has indeed given us "somewhere to go that we can't get to any other way."

Thank you, Faith Ringgold. Your stories, your art, and your spirit will continue to guide and inspire us.
