Alebrijes Inspired by Pedro Linares

We’re excited to announce a brand-new Art in Action lesson inspired by Mexican folk artist Pedro Linares, the visionary creator of alebrijes—brightly colored, fantastical creatures that blend imagination, symbolism, and cultural tradition.

👉 This lesson is available free to all current Art in Action customers!

Perfect for Mexican Heritage Month and beyond, this project brings culture and creativity together in the classroom. Students explore the traditions of Mexican folk art while developing their own unique artistic voices.

In this lesson, students will:

  • Explore the qualities of 3D sculpture and visual texture

  • Identify how geometric shapes, bold colors, and patterns bring Linares’ creatures to life

  • Use creativity and storytelling to design their own unique alebrije

The lesson is geared toward grades 4–8, featuring a hands-on papier-mâché project that encourages students to build and decorate their own sculptures. For younger grades (K–3), our Variations section provides simpler project options to ensure every student can join in the fun.

To further support classrooms, the lesson includes:

  • Spanish-language handouts and Teaching Notes

  • Adaptations and variations for different grade levels

  • Connections to Mexican folk art, multicultural studies, and cultural celebrations

By creating alebrijes, students don’t just make art—they participate in a celebration of Mexican heritage, imagination, and tradition.
