Summer 2020- Family Volunteers!
The staff at Art in Action consider ourselves a family. During this stressful time in the world, it’s been comforting to work together and support each other, not solely in work, but in our daily lives. When our offices were able to reopen in June, we realized we needed additional support to achieve our goals. We were grateful and fortunate that our families stepped right up to help all of us with packing, shipping, organizing supplies, and lesson development. Our kids have been dutifully coming in and volunteering weekly for us. We asked them to share their thoughts about their summer at AiA:
Carter- 9th grade
Favorite thing about volunteering with AiA: I really like making boxes to send to schools. I also like testing the lessons – getting to try new things before anyone else.
Favorite type of art to do: I like to make collages because I like to see how the puzzle of random pieces fits together. I also like to make crafts with duct tape.
Fun activities you’ve done at home this summer: I’ve been playing a lot of video games! But I also like to practice basketball, and I play the tenor saxophone.
Quincy- 7th grade
Favorite thing about volunteering with AiA: I had fun packing lessons in the boxes, locking/unlocking the stair ladder, and rolling around on the dollies
Favorite type of art to do: Clay or molding art with my hands
Fun activities you’ve done at home this summer: Puzzles, spikeball, soccer, and baseball drills in the backyard, and xbox (of course)
Archer- 9th grade
Favorite thing about volunteering with AiA: Making ARTboxes (with tape) and pulling 1,500 lb orders that fill two to three pallets
Favorite type of art to do: I read a lot of books, is that art?
Fun activities you’ve done at home this summer: Reading, driveway basketball, and xbox (Minecraft)
Makena- 12th grade
Favorite thing about volunteering with AiA: Creating art videos for kids. These projects are really fun for the kids to do in their spare time while they are stuck at home due to the pandemic.
Favorite type of art to do: Glass blowing because I’m able to create different shapes from the glass. I’m also able to blow glass and use different colors to create little figurines of things. I have made flowers, leaves, jewelry, etc from glass blowing. Besides glass blowing I also enjoy drawing cartoon characters.
Fun activities you’ve done at home this summer: I have been working as a lifeguard. Also in quarantine, I began baking a lot of cupcakes and cookies. I have also been working on my college applications all throughout summer.
Brendon- Junior in college (California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA)
Favorite thing about volunteering with AiA: I really love the integration of different art techniques that can be done by any age group. Art in Action gives all ages the skills to make stunning artwork from anywhere.
Favorite type of art to do: Watercolors
Fun activities you’ve done at home this summer: During quarantine, I have been channeling my creative energy into sketching and creating fun digital art projects that I can share with anyone that needs inspiration.
Seamus- Katie’s black cat
Favorite thing about volunteering with AiA: Keeping Katie company while she quarantines at home in LA
Favorite type of art to do: Ripping up paper
Fun activities you’ve done at home this summer: Napped on top of Katie’s laptop, said hello to the team on zoom calls
