Art teacher Julie Raskauskus marveled, “It’s really nice to see my students so focused on their work. It’s a luxurious departure from most of the projects that we have at TechBoston.” Julie teaches art to students in grades 6-12 at TechBoston Academy, a Title I college preparatory school in Dorchester, MA. This is their first year using the AiA program afforded them through the Judy Sleeth Scholarship Fund.

The majority of their middle school students have had no prior exposure to arts education. Julie finds herself literally starting at the beginning. She’s working on the fundamentals such as basic art vocabulary and concepts, and how to use art materials properly. “Getting students excited about art and applying this perspective to the real world” is her goal.

“There is a pressing need for a structured curriculum that will inform and enhance our students’ introduction to the artistic world.” Julie’s so excited by the results so far, she submitted their Art in Action pieces for the city-wide art show at Boston City Hall in March!
