Stanford - Art in Action Student Art Contest 2009

In late 2008, Stanford Pediatric Emergency Department told Art in Action about their wish to display children's art for their young patients and invited us to help with this project. We invited all Art in Action students to participate in an art contest, which created great interest. 148 students from 35 Art in Action schools participated with 228 artworks. The artworks were reviewed by Art in Action staff and a 10-person Judging Committee, who selected 17 winning artworks for display, see below. Congratulations to all participants who made this contest a great success! See the artworks here.

Creative Kids at Stanford — November 22, 2008

While hundreds of runners completed the 5 kilometer Stanford ER Run on a sunny Saturday, many of their children explored a range of creative activities in Art in Action's Creative Kids Corner on campus. The kids made colorful masks, decorated tote bags and suitcases, and sculpted animal figures. This is the first annual event to raise funds for the Stanford Department of Emergency Medicine.

Helping Homeless Children — November 19, 2008

More than 60 children and 25 adults participated in the Art in Action event on November 19, 2008 at the San Mateo Main Library to benefit homeless children from the Shelter Network. San Mateo's children’s librarian, Virginia Soletti, read stories to the children including Shel Silverstein's timely "The Giving Tree". Also, eight girls from Junior Girl Scout Troop 2200 of Belmont helped younger children with their artwork and hung the "handprint leaves" on the "Giving Tree".

The art supplies and books brought by the participants were enough to fill three large bins, all for the benefit for the almost 70 homeless children currently at the Shelter Network. Beth Horwitz, Children's Coordinator at the Shelter, said she could hardly wait to develop new art projects for the children using the new materials.

“Parents and grandparents thanked us for giving their children and grandchildren an opportunity to give to others, especially children that do not have a place to live,” says Program Manager Mara Grimes of Art in Action. “Several brought art supplies to help kids in need experience the joys, wonders, and enrichment that the visual arts can provide. This was truly a community effort at the time of Thanksgiving!”

The student projects included a series of Picasso-like faces painted by fourth graders from Highlands Elementary School in San Mateo. Fifth graders from Corte Madera painted delicious desserts that reflect the work of Wayne Thiebaud. Students from Nativity School in Menlo Park created flowers in the style of Georgia O'Keeffe. Impact was the theme of projects by eighth graders from Crystal Springs Uplands School. North Star Academy in Redwood City contributed a variety of artwork, including birds based on paintings by J. J. Audubon, color collages inspired by Robert Rauschenberg, and still life compositions by other modern artists.
