Premark frames on the tan paper. Trace around a 9x12 piece of paper placed in the center of the 12x18 tan paper, to mark the edges of the frame. Leave a 3" border on the top and bottom and a 1.5" border on each side.
Cover work surfaces with newspaper.

Have ready premarked 12x18 tan paper and chalk pastels.
Have ready drawing pencils, glue, and fixative.
Have ready damp paper towels and sponges for cleaning fingers.
VARIATIONS
Make faces using torn paper or cut paper, placing the features in proportion.
Make frames from strips of colored paper, wrapping paper, or ribbon with brocade designs.
Design frames using painted wood, cardboard, or foam core
To simplify project for younger students: Concentrate on drawing and placing features and eliminate focus on highlights and shadows. If students need more practice drawing faces, start with drawing general portraits.
To extend project for older students: Use mirrors to observe faces and draw self-portraits, or personalize the portraits by adding individual features, such as freckles, glasses, or favorite clothes.
